Garden of England adopts a common sense repair approach

The county of Kent aims to spend limited funds wisely on road maintenance

Kent has one of the largest road networks in the country, with over 8000km of carriageway and 6000km of footway. With such vast assets limited funds must be invested wisely, says Kent County Council’s head of highway operations Spencer Palmer.

Striking the right balance between reactive and planned maintenance, and taking account of local community views and perceptions as well as technical condition survey data, are behind what we see as our ‘common sense’ approach to highway renewal in Kent.
